I asked myself that question about the well-dressed man who walked into the Hebrew Free Loan office recently in search of help. Suddenly jobless, he had found work at a much lower salary, was unable to meet the mortgage payments on his suburban Detroit home and faced bankruptcy. The life that he and his family had known seemed over.
“I don’t belong here,” he told us. “But I have nowhere else to turn.”

The donations we receive from individuals in the Jewish community are used to make loans to people in need. Then, as people repay their loans, we distribute the funds to others.
